Ophiopogon planiscapus 'Nigrescens' (AGM)Ophiopogon planiscapus 'Nigrescens', ‘Black Dragon Grass' or Black Mondo Grass is a small, ground cover, evergreen grass-like perennial with almost black foliage in the lily family and is sometimes referred to as ‘Lilyturf'. It grows slowly from short rhizomes, and bears tufts of leaves, from which flowers emerge in racemes held on short stems above the leaves. This plant is commonly used in rock gardens or raised beds as an ornamental plant; owing to its dwarf-like qualities it can be lost in borders, but makes an ideal edging plant.

Polystichum setiferum proliferumThe beautiful ‘Soft Shield Fern’ with its very fine lace foliage it was a favourite in Victorian times. The distinctive shaggy, moss texture and neat habit of growth sets this variety of soft shield fern apart. Young plants have a shuttlecock shape but, as clumps build up, the shapes overlap so the impression is more of a mossy mound. This is a superb textural plant that contrasts well with glossy, hardy ferns such as Asplenium scolopendrium, and other striking shapes such as Solomon's seal and Hostas. Plants are surprisingly drought-tolerant, although they dislike direct sun.

Polystichum tsus-simenseA Japanese species with evergreen deep green fronds. ‘Holly Ferns’ are one of the hardiest ferns around and are ideal for evergreen colour in shady spots in the garden. This particular species is neat and low growing, and has pale green fronds with dark veins and stems. The leaves acquire a silvery sheen as they age, but this simply adds to the plant's interest.

Stipa arundinacea (Anemanthele lessoniana)

Anemanthele lessoniana - Pheasant's Tail Grass (syn. Stipa arundinacea ) In summer this ornamental evergreen grass is streaked orange-brown and it then turns to orange brown all over in winter, when there may be less to catch your eye in the garden. The narrow, flat or inward rolled leaves are dark olive green for the rest of the year. It has a pleasing overall arching habit with interesting purple-green flower spikelets that hang down, almost touching the ground, from midsummer to early autumn. The seed-heads that follow provide a winter food source for finches and other seed-eating birds. Don't be put off growing it if you have a heavy soil.
