Mahonia nitens is an unusual species originating from Mount Omei in Szechuan province, China. Mahonia nitens normally only forms a smallish shrub with pinnate leaves bearing glossy green spiny broad leaflets and emerging coppery red in the spring. From September upright racemes of red in bud yellow centred flowers appear which are followed by blue bloomy fruit in the winter. Easily grown in any moist fertile and preferably well drained soil in a sheltered position in sun or part shade.
