Eryngium campestre, the Field Eryngo, is a distinctive Eryngo native to Europe and a very rare native of these shores. It has local names of Daneweed, Watling Street Thistle, Hundred Headed Thistle and, in Wales, Ysgallen Ganpen. This extremely scarce British native perennial makes a compact tangled architectural structure of stiff, spiky grey-green thorny leaves and flowers. Flowering from July to September, this species was historically used in herbalism as an infusion to treat coughs, whooping cough and urinary infections, whilst the roots, it is claimed, were candied as sweets or boiled and roasted as a vegetable.
