Cupressus cashmeriana is perhaps the most ornamental of cypress trees that can be grown in the UK as an ornamental tree. Although generally regarded as sensitive to drought and wind, it is worth growing in a woodland setting or sheltered place in the garden. This plant has gained the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit It was regarded as only being fully hardy in relatively mild or coastal areas of the UK, but a changing climate is bringing new opportunities.
Cupressus cashmeriana is a medium-sized coniferous tree growing 20–30metres. The foliage grows in strongly pendulous sprays of blue-green, very slender, flattened shoots. The leaves are scale-like, 1–2mm long, up to5mm long on strong lead shoots.
