Chaerophyllum coloratum is a new Umbel to us and very rare indeed in cultivation. Native to the Dinaric Alps, it is a perennial that shows promise as a border perennial for an earlier show of flowers which appear from May.

The foliage is grey/green delicately ferny and soft and the flowers a rich golden yellow in typical umbel form standing at around 60cm tall. As an earlier flowering member of the family, like others including our native Cow Parsley it tends to go dormant as soon as the temperatures of midsummer soar, returning again to growth in late August and September. In a mixed border situation this habit can be quite useful as it clears away to the more typical summer and late summer flowers.

Preferably enjoying a sunny position in a free draining soil, this is an easy plant to please.

If you like subtlety, this is a plant that will charm you.
