Carex siderosticha Banana Boat
Carex siderosticha is a deciduous, rhizomatous, creeping, broad-leaved sedge, that is native to woodland mountain areas in Japan, China and Korea. Unusually broad leaf-width, blades are sometimes described as bamboo-like or hosta-like and this gives rise to the often-used common name of broad-leaved sedge for varieties of this species. Carex ‘Banana Boat' is a cultivar most noted for its variegated foliage. It typically grows to 20-30cm tall. It features broad, grassy leaves that are banana yellow with green margins and green striping. Insignificant brownish flower spikes appear on triangular stems in late spring. This is an outstanding accent plant for brightening up shady gardens or pathways and is also striking in containers. Native to mountain woodlands, Carex siderosticha 'Banana Boat' (Golden Falls) slowly creeps by rhizomes to form a dense mass of bold-textured foliage. It is a long-lived, durable sedge for the woodland garden.
